New release: NPO

Well, here it is: the 12th and final release for the Song-a-Month Project, entitled NPO. I think it’s a fitting way to close the circle.

NPO is the oldest song that I’ve always wanted to finish, dating all the way back to 1994(ish). Some of you might have heard previous iterations…I’ve recorded it a few times but none of them have ever sounded right.

So where does All the Meat Wants go now that the project is finished? More songs? Definitely. Recruit a band, play some shows? Maybe. I’m still kinda stunned that I hit my goal, a few extra months notwithstanding.

What do I do with these tracks? I dunno yet. I’d love for you to tell me what you think – you’re my fans, after all, and I make this music as much for you as for myself.

Thanks for your support these many months, and please continue to share the music!

Enjoy.

I reckon I’m not much of a blogger

…because I utterly failed to do blog posts for the last two releases! Whoopsie.

Not to worry – I love the music and production for both tracks. I enjoy seeing…er, hearing my skills improve with every release. Both of the latest tracks (Glimmer and Little Gothic Baby) feature a new and brilliant guest star, Miriam Anderson. There is not enough hyperbole to describe her voice. Give yourself a treat and check out both tracks.

Cheers!

New track for June – The Grandfather Paradox

It’s finally spring, and nothing says spring like a three-minute pop song! The Grandfather Paradox is a relatively recent composition—about three years old. I’m tremendously proud of this track in all regards: production, performance, and songwriting. Three part harmonies, tasty hooks, and a chorus that’s guaranteed to stick in your head.

No, really. Hear for yourself. If you dig it, please share it around to your friends. The Song-A-Month Project has lost some momentum over the last couple of months so I’m grateful for your help in spreading the word.

Cheers!

New track for May – Lost and Found

I am dog sick so this’ll be a short entry…a quiet, melancholy track this month, featuring a gorgeous piano performance by Shawn Brice of Bloodwire and Slave Unit.

Enjoy.

New track for April – Seven Ways to Sunday

Injury and long work hours be damned. We’re getting back on track. New releases from here on out won’t necessarily be on the first or last day of the month. Once a month is still the goal though!

So here’s #7 of 12: Seven Ways to Sunday, a rockin’ track that’s been kicking around for something like six or seven years now. Some of you might even have previous recordings of it. I guarantee they didn’t rock this hard. I’m happy to call this one DONE!

Some points of interest:

This marks Derek Schubert’s first appearance as a backing vocalist with All the Meat Wants. He’s got a killer voice. I guarantee you’ll hear him again.

New bass! I’ve upgraded the old Ibanez BTB to a five-string MusicMan Sterling. It’s green. I love it.

I dig the production on this track more than most. Space, EQ, relative levels…feels like everything came together pretty well.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

Sometimes the bear eats YOU.

The thing about being a paraplegic is, I’m susceptible to stupid shit that walking folks don’t have to worry about quite so much. Back injuries. Bursitis. Hand and forearm strain (shut up, Beavis). Aaaaand pressure injuries from sitting all the time. Like the one I got this week.

There are two ways to get past these things. One is transplanting my brain into a robot body with the strength of five gorillas. The other is bed rest. Since robot bodies are in short supply (it’s the future, goddamnit! WTF?), I gotta take option two.

Back online with January’s track in a few weeks. In the meantime, I am grateful for my laptop.

New track for December – Summer’s Twilight

Many years ago, when I was in my first goth band, I wrote a song about a girl named Alice for a girl named Jake. The end of the song was overly dramatic (I was, what, 20?) and ultimately unsatisfying. I got to wondering what really happened to Alice…and this, I think, is it.

Once again, Sara’s vocals make the song. She’s amazing.

Enjoy.

New track for November – Mythic

I’m excited to welcome back Sara Shoys on this month’s track, and to introduce multi-talented co-conspirator Danielle Sciocchetti. Mythic started as a sketch last year with just a bass line, a little guitar, and some of Danielle’s lyrics. We both liked the sketch enough where I decided to flesh it out with more lyrics and music for November’s release, with Danielle singing backing vocals. I begged Sara to write and sing a second vocal harmony, and boy howdy did she ever.

I am lucky as hell to have such creative and generous friends, and you are lucky as hell to get to hear them.

Enjoy.

New track for October – Departure

I’m pleased to welcome another guest star! Sara Shoys was kind enough to contribute her lovely, ethereal voice to this month’s track. The track itself has a big, goth/shoegaze kind of sound. All the texture and layering was tough to mix but I dig the way it all turned out. It absolutely captures the place I was in when I wrote it about a year ago.

Enjoy.

New track for September – Fracture

Another new(ish) one this month, written as a sketch approximately a year ago and never recorded before. I have only two things to say about it:

1. It sounds nothing like Swell.
2. The production and musical contributions of my friend Aki made the song sound way better than it ever did in my head.

Here it is.
